This poem is a departure from my usual style. It was written for a prompt from dVerse Poetics : Write a poem that is a prequel to a particular character from a nursery rhyme, Aesop’s fable, book, or mythology. Be sure it’s clear in the poem, who you’re writing about.

Fairy Dust
.
I was once the most fabulous fairy in the land
with millions of followers on Instagram
and all the magic dust a girl could wish for
.
I conjured myself fabulous gowns and
diamond encrusted slippers
fancy tiaras and shimmers for my wings
.
Everyone told me how gorgeous I was
how they admired my sparkling beauty
and envied my perfect life
.
But somehow I felt empty and alone
the more I posted, the less I smiled
all my friends were online…were they even real?
.
Then one day I was flying around
~ to be honest I was showing off ~
when I heard someone weeping down below
.
Something turned in me and I found myself
alighting by a sad young woman
sitting by a fireplace wearing ragged clothes
.
For the first time in ages, I sat
and listened and found myself asking
‘How can I help?’
.
The rest is history…

Very apt for today’s world. Many live in the fantasy of online and feel so empty because of it. The sad part of social media.

I love this, and in the way the fairy goodmother really started out as more of an influencer… maybe there will be real stories of poor girls being helped… (and probably helping the fairy goodmother more)

A magical updated prequel, Carys! I know it’s a bit late for it now, but I could do with a fairy godmother.

Thanks Bjorn. The social media part just crept in but I was pleased with it…nothing can replace the richness of human connection IRL (in real life)

Naw, I’ll send her a message, see what she can do! I think friends and strangers sometimes become our fairy godmothers 😉

I love the idea of the Fairy Godmother becoming her true-self, after the technology and everything; it is an inspiring tale.

Thanks. Yes, somehow the notion of fairy tales and perfect lives portrayed on social media collided!

Oh I love how you’ve described the early days of the Fairy Godmother….that she was quite full of herself until she met the “sad young woman” sitting by the fireplace and it turned her heart…and the rest is herstory! Wonderful prequel.

Oh , of course…herstory!

Carys, I think it’s great that you departed from your usual style to portray the internal transformation of the fabulous fairy… You’ve added substance to the character in a meaningful way.
Much love,
David

Thanks David, I wanted to write about a wolf but found it rather dark so I went to the other end of the spectrum!

Whee! Such a lovely poem. Love the way you worked this prompt to provide background for the fairy and left us bounding forward to story of the unnamed Cinderella. Brilliant!
